Iv'e been asked to create rules for Rookie Team of the Year.
Some thoughts are: - A rookie team must never have cooked in a sanctioned KCBS or MABA four category BBQ contest. Experience in sanctioned "Backyard" grilling events geared for amateurs are allowed. - Rookie teams must declare their rookie status prior to competing in events for that calendar year. No pro-rating of earned points prior to declaration. Declaration can be made by: 1) email to the sanctioning committee or to any board member, 2) notification on membership application or renewal, or 3) on the MABA member's profile on the website...... - Follows MABA TOY rules. Rookie of the Year (ROY) designation is for overall ranking only and not individual categories. A Rookie team's points count toward overall TOY and TOY for individual categories competing against all other teams. A rookie team may win ROY and TOY within the same year. - A competition season is defined as January 1 through December 31st of a given year. A Rookie team's point totals will not carry over to the following year regardless of any partial year membership.
Some problems I forsee are:
How can we keep teams from changing their name each year, under different team members applying to MABA, to create a “rookie team” each year? Or members from old (other) teams from previous years?
Any thoughts? Opinions?

I would like to believe that folks would police themselves, but in reality we all know that there are some who would do anything for recognition. I would think if they listed their team members as part of their submission, MABA could check to see if any were "head cooks" at an event. Add to that, if any MABA member observes a established veteran cook, proving more than advice to a team, then it should be reported to the board for a decision as to their status.
random thoughts

random thoughts Well then, may I be the first declared MABA "rookie" for the 2010 season?

random thoughts Agree with Chris I would hope that people would be honest, however it would be embarassing if you had experience and did poorly I do like the idea.

Realistically, no one can be at every event and check every team. We may just have to rely on honesty and hope someone would help report any infraction.

If they do well enough to gain ROY status, folks will get to know who most of the memebers are. If they show up for their award the second year with a different name but the same player's, people will notice.

Well, if we had a Rookie of the Year standing last year, you may have done well. This "Rookie of the Year" standings will start this 2010 season.

I don't think that anyone could slip through as a rookie with out someone noticing. Maybe if someone was competing out west and moved here I can't see them keeping it a secret.
I'd like to see "rookie" defined to allow some previous cooking experience. It's a matter of which comes first. MABA isn't a household name. I think most of our members heard about us at comps they were competing in. So where should the cut off be? Observing a team once? Cooking with a team a couple times? Cooking as a team 3 times?
Also most teams don't do as many comps as some of the more seasoned teams. Maybe we should use the top 3 finishes... That would level the field a bit. I also see the logic of not limiting it to 3. After all it's Team of the Year. And teams should be rewarded for there efforts. Any thoughts?

Why would "rookie" be defined as anything other that a first year team with a raw, no comp experience cook? Tom, I'm not sure what you are asking.

Speaking from experience, I don't think prior knowledge of this award would have changed the number of comps that we competed in last year. Which was our rookie year. But hey that's just me.
